BRAVA is the first independent oil and gas company in Brazil to develop a deepwater production system all the way through from its initial phase
BRAVA Energia announced the start of production from the FPSO Atlanta, in the field with the same name, located in the Santos Basin, on December 31, 2024, after connecting and starting up the first two wells. Production quickly stabilized at about 20,000 barrels per day. With this milestone, BRAVA becomes the first independent oil and gas company in Brazil to develop a deepwater production system all the way through from its initial phase.
BRAVA’s CEO, Décio Oddone, celebrated this important moment for the company, saying “The first oil from Atlanta is a milestone for BRAVA and reaffirms our value generation strategy. BRAVA is the first and only independent company in the country to develop a greenfield deepwater production system. We have worked hard to reach this moment. This achievement is the result of the efforts and dedication of our team over the years. We celebrate today and continue working for BRAVA to generate even more value for its shareholders and for society”.
BRAVA will be investing about US$ 1.2 billion in the project. The FPSO Atlanta has the capacity to produce up to 50,000 barrels of oil per day, to treat up to 140,000 barrels of water per day and to store up to 1.6 million barrels of oil. In the first phase of what is known as the Definitive System (up to mid-2025) six wells will be connected to the FPSO Atlanta. The Definitive System replaces the FPSO Petrojarl I, which operated three wells during the Accelerated Production System.
BRAVA’s director of Offshore Operations, Carlos Mastrangelo, states that the first oil from Atlanta reflects a new phase for the company. He says that, “The start of production from the Atlanta Definitive System crowns a process involving much hard work and effort from all the teams involved. Atlanta is a remarkable project and its achievement represents the attaining one of our principal short-term goals. The Definitive System will substantially enhance the company’s production and resilience”.
Most of the activities for the execution of the Atlanta Definitive System were carried out in Brazil, with emphasis on global supplier management. Mastrangelo added that, “This result was only possible thanks to a collaborative working environment involving our team and the teams from OneSubsea, Yinson, Baker Hughes, Sapura, Prysmian, and Constellation, among others”.
Sustainability
By reutilizing part of the existing steel, BRAVA Energia avoided the emission of more than 100,000 tons of CO2 during the adaptation of the FPSO Atlanta. Other measures adopted included: recovering residual heat from turbine exhaust gases; blanketing storage tanks containing hydrocarbons; energy integration to increase efficiency; and using Atlanta’s oil as an alternative fuel to diesel. The FPSO Atlanta will also have an efficient carbon management process, which will significantly reduce the greenhouse gas emissions.
Regarding integrity management, it will be the first unit to operate using a real-time structural calculation system (Digital Twin), allowing greater predictability in managing the FPSO’s integrity.
The contract for the construction and operation of the vessel was signed with Yinson Production in February 2022. In July 2023, Yinson Production exercised its option to purchase the FPSO Atlanta. Exercising this option initiated the validity of the charter, operation and maintenance contracts, for terms of up to 20 years.
